Position: Technical Consultant
Location: Taunton, Somerset
Rate: Negotiable

The Position
This position is at a significant level of responsibility as it requires skills in pre- & post-sales consultancy services, training & documentation, product development design & testing and giving papers & workshops. Primarily it requires the ability to undertake consultancy assignments for capacity management and Athene related implementation projects, pre-sales presentations, technical demos, technical training, installation and post-sales support of Athene in the UK, USA and elsewhere. The position will report directly to the Director responsible for these areas. The specialist will also work closely on specific projects with the Development Group to assist in the identification of customer requirements, write functional specifications for new enhancements and help alpha test new releases. The specialist will also work with the Help Desk (ActionLine) on agreed problems and QA in specific testing areas. Full training will be given in Metron’s products. Although Metron is based in Taunton, the successful applicant need not necessarily relocate, but regular meetings will be held in Taunton.

The Applicant
The applicant needs good systems software background in UNIX or Windows, preferably with experience of tools for System Management and monitoring/managing networks and performance. Relevant mainframe experience is an advantage. Some knowledge of TCP/IP and C would also be an advantage. Needs to be able to resolve installation/implementation problems on any UNIX variant or Windows and resolve systems problems on a PC. Relevant experience of UNIX and/ or Windows is expected, probably in systems management or technical support on a large size configuration. Job experience is also likely to include time with a UNIX/Windows supplier and/or a UNIX/Windows software house or consultancy.

The Role
The role requires flexibility. It is both office and client based and may involve extensive travel from time to time, principally in the UK and occasionally overseas Sometimes 100% of the time will be at a client site on a specific project. However, this not typically the case and most projects are less than twenty days. Although in the last couple of years some assignments have been about two months in duration, much of the work was actually done at our Taunton office. The aim is that a consultant is doing paid work up to 50% of the time and out of the office on average one or two days per week. The role requires the ability to act as an effective ambassador for Metron, able to promote the company, its products and its interests.

The Profile
Needs good personal qualities for pre-sales activities - good oral and written communication, inter-personal & presentation skills, be personable, self-motivated and responsible. Metron will provide technical liaison, training and support to clients, third party channels and distributors and possibly their clients. This will involve installing the software, setting up product demonstrations at remote sites, presenting the results and giving training. Foreign language skills are not necessary -all the business and training is currently carried out in English - as is the product and its documentation. The applicant needs to have a good technical background, have excellent spoken and written English, be numerate (but not necessarily a maths degree), likely to be a graduate. The applicant needs to be commercially aware, flexible, mobile, energetic and able to travel extensively at short notice. Clean driving licence. EC citizen or full UK work permit. Good references.

The Package
Initial salary negotiable up to approx £40,000, Profit Related Pay Scheme, Life Insurance, Permanent Health Insurance, Health Plan, 20 days holiday a year (increasing to 25).
