Tactical projects require a detailed scoping stage and an audit of the available data and existing capacity management processes. It is typically a large project but usually with a focused objective such as implementing a reporting regime or introducing formal workload analysis or modeling. These projects tend to last so many weeks, maybe a month’s effort spent over an elapsed quarter. For this investment of say 10 – 20 consultancy days, a site can use Metron’s consultants as a catalyst to take forward their own implementation to the next stage confident that they are using the best approach.
A preliminary stage will be required to review this proposal, establish a clear understanding of the project, and to plan the sequence and timing of the stages of the study. This will be followed by a data audit stage, to determine the availability of required data and to modify existing data capture options as necessary. The main stage of work is defined and agreed in these two initial stages.
The functional areas for which performance reports or capacity plans are required are defined. Each will require an analysis of pertinent historical data, the creation and calibration of any baseline models, and a range of forward projections based on expected transaction levels and potential increases in resource consumption due to functionality enhancements.
To complete this study successfully, Metron requires:
- Local staff to collect appropriate performance data using Metron's Acquire data capture
- A suitable hardware and software environment to run the Athene applications
- Access to local PDB and CDB data
- Support from appropriate system support and database technicians
- Assistance in the collation of data relating to volumes for potential workload variations
- Specific agreement on which future scenarios are to be evaluated
The typical number of man-days effort required for each task is shown below, based on Metron’s consultants working alongside local staff to help build any required models and assist in the appropriate analyses and reporting:
- Preliminaries – 1 man-day
- Data audit – 2 man-days
- Function Plans : depends on site and project variables
The quality of each performance report or capacity plan will be determined by iteratively tracking the actual behavior of each against the plan, identifying the causes of any divergence, reviewing the contributory assumptions and factors, and modifying accordingly.
